Hobbies
In the old days, people enjoyed what were called "hobbies" - some would say this word is now slightly old fashioned and prefer to use the term "leisure interests"
Whatever you like to call it, knowing your loved ones favourite hobbies can give you a great introduction into a whole range of gifts they might like and apprciate. When people have hobbies, it's easier to buy for them - even if you just treat them to a gift voucher, they can then spend your gift on something they need to support their hobby. Gifts such as book vouchers can help them choose a book to give them greater knowledge of their hobby, or a magazine subscription can give them several months or a year's supply of magazines designed to help them boost their knowledge, acquire tips and advice, pick up "how to's" and even find out about courses they might like to attend.

Benefits of having hobbies could be...
- Learning new things helps keep our brains active. You know what they say - use it or lose it!
- Our hobby can help others. For instance, my aunt loves knitting, and she knits blankets for cats at her local cat rescue
- Hobbies can keep us fit
- They can help us meet up with people with similar interests, especially if we sign up for a class or course or go away on a residential weekend
- They help us relax and give us a sort of therapeutic way to pass the time. When you're doing something you love and have a very natural interest in, it's amazing how time passes.
- Hobbies give us something to get lost in and indulge in. They give us something to focus on away from any problems and stresses in our lives
- Knowing we're going to indulge in doing a hobby in the evening gives us something to look forward to while we're at work or school. It's "our" time.
- Hobbies can be cost effective - they give us something to spend our time on instead of doing other things which can be more expensive. Spend a Saturday afternoon on a hobby, and you may well have more of a feeling of peace & contentment than if you go browsing the shops & running up credit card bills. That said, hobbies usually involve some outlay but at least the cost is going in a direction you enjoy
- Hobbies help reduce boredom and give us a sense of purpose & enjoyment
- Hobbies can be done at home or away from home
- A hobby could lead to a new career - many people turn hobbies into a business, especially if they've been doing them for some years
- A hobby could lead to volunteering or getting involved in teaching others "how to" to it. This could be through something like the University of the Third Age or adult education classes, or writing an e-book or setting up a blog or a website.
- Hobbies can help keep our brains active, especially if we keep learning and developing our skill level.
- Hobbies can be a great way to hand down a skill or enjoyable way to pass the time to the younger generation. Knitting for instance often brings grandparents & their grandchildren together. They can help bridge the generation gap.
- Hobbies can lead to international travel if you find events & networking groups in other parts of the world to get involved with
